Outfoxed, Or: Fox News = Biased

by hulk

So I’ve got an invitation from izzat to go to a houseparty to see “Outfoxed”, which is about how Fox News is anything but fair and balanced, and instead, promotes not just the Republican Party Line, but the line straight from the white house. It’s really amazing what the Kool-Aid drinkers are up to.

On a side note, in response to my Michael Moore rant, a friend of mine, who out of fear refuses to post here, said, “You should’ve seen the scene where he sits there for 11 minutes, looking like a lost puppy dog.” So let’s create an extreme caricature of someone, then start blaming them for the things that happen in our fantasies. The liberals think of Bush as some moron. So they laugh at things he never said, or things he didn’t do. He’s a lost puppy dog. He’s a man who’s just been told that the nation is under attack and trying to not lose composure in front of a classroom full of young children. What is he supposed to do? Say, “RUN CHILDREN! TONS OF PEOPLE ARE DYING! AUGH!”. Would that be more presidential? Should he rush out of the room, worrying these kids and the country? Or should he sit there, continue to read as he did, and maintain a presidential appearance while considering his options and how to make an appropriate exit?

Back to Outfoxed.

My first argument is, A: So what? If Fox News is biased, who cares? It’s cable news. You choose to pay for cable, and you choose whether or not to watch that channel. And you know what? More and more people are CHOOSING to watch it. Why? Because for the first time on TV we can finally get a conservative viewpoint. Here’s a cable news show that tries to have both liberals and conservatives on-air hashing out their views. CNN had a limited bit of that with Crossfire, and you get bits and pieces of it elsewhere, but nowhere did you get both almost all day. CNN isn’t conservative, it’s alternatively conservative and liberal, so both sides tend to either love it or hate it. But Fox News, you get both at once. And if you feel it’s too conservative, you…CHANGE THE CHANNEL. We’re Americans, where we can choose. We’re not like the BBC, where you’re forced to pay for it and it’s the only TV news you get.

Second, the perceived conservative slant argument from Outfoxed is based on what, exactly? Well, I looked up a promo for the movie. Point A, some ex-employees were amazed that they were told to consider conservative viewpoints. Worse, we had things like…managers who LIKED America! SHOCKING! And the absolute worst: during the Iraq War… brace yourself… Fox News made it sound like… we were winning! OBVIOUS BIAS! We all know from the New York Times that we barely defeated the amazing Iraqi army, that our soldiers were outmatched from the beginning, and we were in a losing battle until the Iraqis all mysteriously retreated. AND Fox News supported our troops throughout. DEPLORABLE!

So aside from some employees which Fox dismisses as disgruntled low-level ex-employees, what does “Outfoxed” have? The shocking statistic…that 3/4 of all guests on Brit Hume’s show at 6 pm…ARE CONSERVATIVE! Does that seem suspect to you? Not that 3/4 of the guests on Brit Hume’s show have been conservative. But if Fox News is a 24-hour channel…presumably with at LEAST 24 programs, an hour each…why use one as your big amazing statistic? What about the rest of the programs? I mean, why not a shocking statistic that says “3/4 of all guests on Fox News are conservative”? Where’s that statistic? Hmm…

Third (or fourth, I can’t remember), why are the liberals whining so loudly that we finally have a cable news network that will allow a conservative opinion to be aired? They have a ton of newspapers, including the big ones, like the New York Times, Boston Globe, and LA Times, and several others I’m forgetting at the moment. They have their Air America or whatever it’s called… which none of them are supporting, I might add that the poor thing can’t even pay its bills because the liberals aren’t helping them, and they have plenty of liberals dispersed throughout MSNBC, CNN, and even Fox News! Further, they have all the network news people! Katie Couric! George Stephanopoulos! Dan Rather! Tom Brokaw! Peter Jennings! And almost all the journalists working for NBC, ABC, and CBS. I heard some statistic that an overwhelming majority of journalists SELF-IDENTIFY as liberals.

So what is their point? Even if I lose the argument on whether Fox News is unbalanced, where’s the horrible conspiracy? Who’s the victim? The only viewers are watching by choice. So what’s the whining about, you long-haired smelly hippy ignorant losers? My first argument is, A: So what? If Fox News is biased, who cares? It’s cable news.
