Okay, so the liberals are having a field day vilifying Rush Limbaugh.
I’ve just finished reading an article in TIME dripping with hatred for him. Over his current drug flap and his comments about Donovan McNabb, for which ESPN pressured him to leave. Here’s my problem: I don’t think Rush said anything deserving of punishment. Don’t get me wrong, normally I think the man is a fat idiot who runs his mouth off. But here’s what he said: “The media has been very desirous that a black quaterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn’t deserve. The defense carried this team.” Okay, fine. A few statements there.
First, the media wants black quarterbacks to do well. Sure they do. It’s about bringing minorities to an equal playing field out on the field. Just look at how Tiger Woods became famous. Great golf player, but also noted for being the first African-American playing pro (I think. Please correct me if I’m wrong). The media likes it when minorities do well in sporting events, because it adds diversity to sports. I consider that a statement of fact, but I recognize it as an opinion. The second part of the statement, that McNabb didn’t deserve credit, and that the defense did, is a fair statement. I don’t agree with it, personally I like McNabb. But this is a sports analysis. My big question is, where the hell is the racism? Where’s the racial insensitivity? Sure, Rush brought up the quarterback’s race. So has everyone else, including the quarterback himself. And if you really wanna call Rush a racist, do me a favor and take a look at the Eagles defensive line. It’s pretty damn diverse. So to hassle Rush for wanting to give credit to the defensive line rather than the qb is pretty stupid.
I don’t care for Rush either. But I really think the only reason he was attacked for this was that people *wanted* to attack him. It’s just stupid. Do me one last favor if you’re unconvinced: revisit the statement, and pretend Terry Bradshaw or one of the other talking heads had said it. Would you find it offensive then? I doubt it.
