Paying Penance with Randomness

I usually have a bit of time at work to do some websurfing, and of course I have my usual list of sites that I check daily. Oh hell, let’s not beat around the bush – I have a TON of time to websurf and write for the site. About a year ago when I started with my current company, I was doing ten times the work I do now and was paid considerably less. Then a better position in another department opened which I applied for and was hired, and now I have a better title and more money although I do a whole lot less. Figures, doesn’t it? It’s very Office Space. The guy I now work for is one of those last minute people, which isn’t too big of a deal except that he’s very picky about details. As in, after I scramble to put together a last minute proposal and it needs to go to compliance right then or it’s not going to make it on time, he wants me to change the font size one up on half of the proposal. This week is one of those weeks where a lot needs to get done and he’s waited until the last possible week to do it.

And that’s why you haven’t seen anything on the site in the last day or so. This bothers me because when I go to my favorite sites I like to see something to read, even if it’s five minutes of crap that I have no interest in. My job leaves me a lot of spare time, and when you’re on your third day of having nothing to do, you appreciate the dumbest ways to spend your time because it keeps you from thinking about how bored you are. No, don’t email me your work. I’m not that bad off, really. Continue Reading »

Free Parking, Or: Your rant here

This site runs a huge risk of groupthink. The problem is izzat has moved away and it is unknown when or if she will post again. She was our sole liberal voice. That leaves us in the dangerous cycle of me ranting, some random person writing a one-sentence “You’re wrong!” type comment, and before you know it I get lazy in my ranting and I write stuff like, “I don’t like liberals. Therefore I’m right.” or “Cheese is good. Vote for Bush.” However true it may be that cheese is good, I don’t wanna end up like that. Therefore I am extending an offer. For whichever liberal reader of this site has the courage, I am offering you three free rants. What I mean by that is that I will make no refutation of your arguments, as long or short or offensive to me as they may be. It’s open season – for three rants. After that hopefully we can engage in stimulating debate through rants and comments. I will also promise no backsies – I will not attempt to refute an earlier post while on a later topic. Your rants will remain unrefuted – by me – for all time. I cannot speak for redshift or anyone else, but I think you can clearly see on this site that you don’t have much to worry about when it comes to political debate.

My invitation is open, the line in the sand is drawn. Please step forward. I desperately need a sparring partner.

I Find Your Lack of Pants Disturbing

If you haven’t heard it on the news or seen anyone wandering around without pants, today is National Underwear Day. Arise, pantless masses! Come forth in your boxers, your tightie whities or your thongs!

It makes me yearn for the days of Underoos! Everyone I knew had a different kind and they were cool because you could wear the characters you liked most. It’s crazy how much has changed in thirty years. Back then we wore Darth Vader and Superman. (I personally had Princess Leia underoos and they were better than Wonder Woman underoos any day.) Today kids are wearing tshirts that say “Porn Star,” which is crazy as hell. What is wrong with people nowadays?

Today’s Kings and Queens are:
Homer Simpson
hulk
All Victoria Secret Models
Pro Wrestlers

I can’t think of any other notable pantless persons. If you can, add them below in the comments section.

Should you choose to be one of the pantless masses in the honor of this day but didn’t read my article from last week, we encourage you to wear something without skidmarks.

Go forth, Kings and Queens of No Pants, and rule the day!!

More party! More fun!

In response to hulk’s recent rant about the Democrats, the obvious solution seems to be a multi-party system. That way everyone could match their personal criteria to one of several candidates, instead of picking one issue that ends up determining their status. Like going to Starbucks and saying “I’d like this drink, with this kind of milk, with this kind of flavor, in this size, and I want it hot/iced/with sprinkles/with whipped cream/with strippers.” Starbucks is a successful empire because their product is good and because they have a system that allows for customization, and America seems to love customization.

In a viable multi-party system, one could say, “well, I’m anti-abortion, so I’m not a Democrat, but I’m anti-gun, so I’m not a Republican either. I like to support environmental initiatives, but I also support smaller government, and this makes me a [insert fourth or fifth party's name here]. I’m going to go vote now!” Northern Ireland, for example, has at least four major political parties. Most fall on one side or the other of the old British/Republic of Ireland line, but on each side of that line there are still multiple issues to have opinions on. A multi-party system allows people to match their candidate on more than just one or two issues.

But given the strength of third parties in this country (laughable at best), I doubt the dual-party system is gonna change soon. Nope, instead of having multiple choices, politically we’re still Coke or Pepsi, Democrat or Republican.

Backpack Goodies

I’ve added a page for Backpack Goodies, i.e. utilities and scripts I’ve written for Backpack. The first is Hide Backpack Page Warning, a greasemonkey script which does just what it says! When you’re at your page limit, it fades away the annoying yellow warning box.

Obligatory Backpack post

I feel it is my duty to inform the readers of Halffull of good things. (I was going to say “all our readers who are virtuous and pure of heart”, but I want someone to actually read this)

37signals has come up with another gem, released this month, called Backpack. When they released Ta-Da lists, I was an avid user for quite a while. It only had a few minor issues like the reordering of elements not being quick enough – it could desperately use a drag’n'drop system. Other than that, it was marvelous – quite simple and intuitive, and with just enough use of AJAX to be useful.

Backpack has obsoleted it in one fell swoop. In essence, it’s a personal information manager, or PIM, on steroids. This is not to say that it has every feature under the sun, or even that it’s terribly innovative in its type of features. The genius was in getting it just right. It’s not a wiki, but it has some wiki-like syntax thanks to Redcloth and some wiki-style interconnectedness thanks to its page-based design and easy linking. You can have any number of notes, files, images, list items, and body text on every page. The free version offers 5 pages (more than enough for many people) and 10 reminders, with no images or files; the pay versions start at $5/month.

The reminder system is great – not only is its interface intuitive (“+15″ to be reminded in 15 minutes, or just “7:30pm” for a specific time) but you can be reminded via email or even to your cell phone. [Note: Currently you can choose one (or both) of these options, but they're global, not per-message. Hopefully that will change soon.]

If you’re not a fan of web forms, you can even email content to your pages. Each page has a unique email address – you can send notes, files/images, and even make todo lists via email through an easy syntax.

Complaints?

  1. Backpack inherited its list system from Ta-Da Lists, which means it has the same awkward reordering.
  2. While Backpack makes sharing your pages publically, or collaborating on pages with friends, quite easy, they only offer full public read-only and private read/write options. It could really use private read-only and public read/write (wiki-style) options as well.
  3. There are a couple features that might come in handy – a calendar element, for example. Currently calendars have to be made with HTML tables done through textile, which, while easy enough, have to be edited manually every update.

These are really minor complaints though, and 37signals listens (and often implements) suggestions from their forum. If there’s something you miss, they’re probably already thinking about it.

Things I’ve used Backpack for so far:

  1. Storing a Quick Reference of my various ID numbers, IP addresses, contacts, etc.
  2. Listing books/websites I want to read, and in what time frame.
  3. Keeping track of WoW information, like talent builds, quest to-dos, etc.
  4. Email reminders of important tasks, like picking up hulk at the airport.
  5. And of course, general notes, todos, songs I want to download, etc. Pretty much anything fits.

[edit] They added drag-and-drop reordering, so my biggest complaint is gone. It works really well, too, and for both to-dos and notes. Check it out! [edit] After more than two years, they’ve finally added a calendar element. However, it’s extremely basic at the moment, and couldn’t be used as a full calendar system unless you have the most boring life ever. In addition, Backpack has been nearly obsoleted by newer, more interactive web applications. I personally haven’t used it in well over a year. However, 37signals is working on a Backpack rewrite which could be quite interesting.

Phew

I was getting ready to go on a storming protest there. As was the entire in-studio crowd. But lucky for us, Nadia sucks. Go Bo.

Besides that, I’ve just been addicted to WoW as usual. Anyone who’s played can comment to the same effect. It’s just that good. To think that EQ used to substitute…   My guild continues to kick ass, and I have a mage on the side that I’m having all kinds of fun with. Especially with the character transfers to the test realm, which let me test any newfangled talent builds that pop into my head without going completely broke…
