Well, Bush won the popular vote this time, and polls indicate that many of those who turned out to support him claimed the number one thing they look for in an election race is “moral issues.” My question is this: how long will the newly re-elected President wait before fulfilling some of his implicit promises to the right-wing conservatives who turned out to support him?
How long will it be before he selects a conservative justice to replace the ailing Rehnquist, or tries to pass further restrictions on stem-cell research? How soon will he start working on further restrictions to same-sex marriage?
When one depends so largely on a moral platform to get re-elected, the expectations for the accomplishments of the second term are high. When is it all going to start? I’m guessing about a month — until then we’ll be talking about unifying the country and all being Americans together regardless of party affiliation. Let’s all hold hands for a month before we start screaming “heathen!” “fundamentalist!” and gnashing our teeth, shall we?
Hopefully soon. After all, 52% of people voted for him for a reason. They like those things.
November 4th, 2004, at 2:18 pm #The latest is that Ashcroft may be resigning. If he does, I will dance. I can’t remember him accomplishing much aside from helping the music companies sue us and covering up those bare-breasted justice statues. If I’m wrong please correct me.
I’ve been debating the gay thing myself. Here’s my conundrum. I can say right away that I have no problem with gay people loving each other. That’s fine. Second, I’ve reconsidered my position on gay marriage, and come to the conclusion that if J-Lo can marry someone every few months, than marriage isn’t really something sacred anymore. So that’s fine. But I’m still not crazy about gay adoption. I honestly think that gay couples should be held to a more stringent standard than normal couples. Before anyone objects to my use of the word normal, I’m using it in a popular context, 99% of humans are heterosexual. I know that’s unacceptable to the PC police, but let’s deal with some hard facts. Male and Female are different. There is no getting around that. The balance of male and female make for a stable home. This is where a child should be ideally raised. Before anyone goes picking out exceptions, let me ask the question: can we believe that most couples, I stress most, act in a manner natural to them, meaning men act like men and women act like women? If the answer is yes, than it follows that most couples have the right balance for a child to be raised. Yes there are some wonderful examples of gay couples raising children. Little examples don’t really matter, what we need is a national study on how gay couples raising children compare to heterosexual couples. Of course that’s so unacceptable that I don’t see it happening. Bringing me to my main problem with gays and lesbians.
It’s unacceptable to raise questions about them. Especially for us college-educated people. We had it beaten into our heads from day one that gay people are wonderful and fabulous and we cannot ask questions or we will be labeled hate mongerers. This is bullshit. And that’s where the backlash comes in. You want to know why 11 states voted against gay marriage? Because they were sick of homosexuals and college educated people, such as us, shoving it down their throats that they’re all stupid fucking rednecks and how dare they not find it beautiful when two men make out in front of them. These people find it disgusting. Ask yourself why. It’s unnatural. Yes, I DID JUST SAY THAT. It’s unnatural. Now stop frothing at the mouth and deconstruct that word. Biologically and socially, it’s un-natural. To us heterosexual types. However, it’s natural to the gays and lesbians. The problem is we’re operating according to two different natures. That’s the underlying problem. Heterosexuals don’t understand homosexuals because they’re not gay!
Have the heterosexuals dished out more than their fare share of intolerance? Sure. But gays and lesbians did the same right back. And then they’re shocked that the general public is unaccepting of them. The simple hard truth is that you’re gonna have to fight to change people. You just don’t walk in and say, Ok, I’m here and you have to love who I am now. How dare you not love who I am! Hate-mongerers! I heard a member of the UR gay community say how tolerance is no longer acceptable, people have to start accepting gays or else.
You can’t force acceptance. What they need is a series of commercials showing ultra-nice gay people giving out flowers and candy to children. What the gay lobby doesn’t need is to sue the courts to overturn a ballot that the people overwhelmingly voted for. I won’t get into the bullshit of activist courts deciding that people’s votes don’t matter. But I will say this. The homosexuals are only making it worse for themselves when they get nastier and more litigous. It sucks but it’s the truth. I feel sympathy for them, but they’re not doing a very good job of gaining acceptance. They need a change in tactics.
