The Passion, Or: ADL threatens to sue Jesus over promoting non-Jewish lifestyle

I still haven’t seen it yet, I’m still debating whether I want to see it. I would expect that it’s emotionally intense, judging from people’s reactions (at least according to the articles), and considering the subject matter. But I’m ticked.

I watched Mel Gibson’s interview with Diane Sawyer and I couldn’t help but laugh. Not at Mel, the man’s dead-on. At Diane, who seemed so perplexed by someone who actually beleived in God. It was a stunning concept for her. Many of us (myself included) pay nothing but lip service to our professed faiths, and thus arises the categorization that someone who actually believes is some kind of religious nut. Not just that, but the fact that Mel (can I call him Mel?) believes that the Holy Spirit worked through him to make this movie. Shock! Some kind of imaginary ghost? What kind of nutbar nonsense is this? Well, I gotta tell ya, I buy it. Something like this, you don’t roll over in bed and decide you’re gonna make a movie about the last hours of Jesus. You’ve gotta have inspiration, and you’ve got to have some kind of higher strength to do what he’s doing, making what could be a career-ending movie, standing for something he believes in that is so threatening to so many others, so much so that they’ll denounce him at the top of their lungs. Of course now that the movie is out, the criticism has abated quite a bit, and all you hear is murmurs about anti-semitism without a whole lot of substance. Continue Reading »

Gay Marriage, Or: Abusing the legal system in any which way you want to

Alright this bugs me. The gay lobby has become flamboyant with our legal system. I know that doesn’t make any sense, I just wanted to use the word flamboyant. Ahem. So we’re all well used to the fact that in many (most?) places, it’s illegal to discriminate against gays for jobs or anything else. We also know that it’s a “hate crime”, a.k.a. ridiculous nonsense, to do anything illegal to a gay person. Hate crimes tick me off too, because I can’t imagine anyone who murdered someone else out of love for them. It’s just silly that killing a so-called minority is somehow worth greater punishment, that their life or livelihood is worth more than that of us non-minorities.

Back to the issue at hand. So the gay lobby has been using our legal system to forward their agenda. What happens when the legal system doesn’t favor their agenda? When we have a president who believes marriage belongs between a man and a woman? When a clear majority of the people of the state of California vote that marriage should be defined as being between a man and a woman in their state constitution? What then? Well first, if you’re a judge who decides to make things up from the bench, you rule that the Massachusetts legislature must make a law legitimizing gay marriage. Yeah, because it specifically says that in the constitution, and that equality applies to everything across the board. While we’re at it, why doesn’t the equality clause in the constitution give me equal powers to that judge so I can issue another ruling contradicting his? Making up things is fun. Continue Reading »

Juvenile vs. Adult Trials

In Texas and Florida, two fine conservative states, many juvenile criminals are sentenced and tried as adults. This leads to longer sentencing; a murder, such as the one mentioned in the Title IX case, could lead to life imprisonment if tried and sentenced under adult penalties rather than to 3-4 years in juvenile incerceration. In other states, like Maryland, for example, young criminals are tried and sentenced as juveniles, and they serve their time in facilities that are geared specifically toward rehabilitation.

So what’s the issue? I don’t understand why the disparity in sentencing is so great between states. (In the case of the young man who had a violent history and stabbed his girlfriend to death in school, I thought 3-4 years was not long enough in prison. This is probably gender bias on my part.) Interestingly enough, the young man in question committed his crime in Texas, but was tried as a juvenile. Usually Texan juvenile criminals are tried as adults. Why was that not the case in this situation?

So where a young person commits a crime can have a vast effect on the rest of their life. The moral of the story, I guess, is if you’re going to stab someone, do it in a liberal state.

Title IX and Suing the School

In Texas, a woman is suing the local school district over the stabbing death of her daughter at school. The woman’s daughter had broken up with her boyfriend the night before. The ex-boyfriend had a history of violent assaults against others, particularly against young women who had rejected him. The victim allegedly told several teachers that she was afraid that her ex-boyfriend might hurt her, but no one seems to have filed an official complaint or report. The boyfriend tracked the girl down in school and stabbed her to death. He will serve between 3 and 4 years in juvenile prison.

The girl’s mother is suing the school district under Title IX, which provides equal opportunity for students in sports. The mother alleges that teachers and other school officials knew of the threat against her daughter’s life and did nothing to prevent the murder, and that this is negligence under Title IX, which also protects students from sexual harassment. However, to win the case, the mother will have to prove the school was aware of the harassment and took no action, which may be difficult.

I’m not sure what’s going on here. This kid had a serious violent history and no one listened to this girl when she said she was afraid? On the other hand, is it fair to sue the school district for several million dollars?

Atkins is for Suckers

You know, for months now I’ve laughed at the Atkins diet, and laughed at anyone who tries it. You’re a gullible, incompetent bastard.

With that out of the way, look at this story that was just passed to me, which I found quite amusing.

The guy died weighing 258 pounds from a heart attack, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. What the hell did he think eating all that crap would get him, a shiny coat?

If you need to lose weight, I’ve recently learned that diet and exercise might work. Or you could take pills. Or a chainsaw. Any of the above are smarter than Atkins.
